The Memaw Tree

We planted a tree last weekend. Every time we plant a tree we like to do it in honor of someone (even though this is the first time). Memaw was my grandmother. My mother recently sent me this email about her:

"You probably don't remember that today was Mother's birthday. She would have been 99. Daddy and she were faithful in all they did. But she, through her challenges, showed her faith even more obviously. We, as her children, are blessed through her faithfulness.
Exodus 20:5-6 "I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God....showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments." I believe her righteous life is a blessing to us just by her life's example and her love for her family. Each one of you are exactly the kind of person she admired. You all possess qualities she had and appreciated. She had a great sense of humor and loved music. She enjoyed beauty in her home as well as in nature. She loved the Lord and studying his word. She loved the church. She helped missionaries, pulpit ministers, and their families. She was enthralled by "good preaching" and Bible classes.
On this day, I want to honor her because she never got the college education she always wanted, but she was committed to providing it for her children. At one point, I would have probably dropped out if [it weren't for her]. She would be ecstatic that my children have overshot her expectations and worked on advanced degrees. Mind you, she wasn't hung up on degrees per se, but she thought everyone should have the desire to be an educated person. She herself was proof of that."

So today we honor my Memaw and the blessings both spiritual and physical that she has left as our inheritance.
